Santa Cruz - Request for Qualifications
In October of 2008, Santa Cruz issued a Request for Qualifications for a PRT system to alleviate the Highway 1 weekend beach traffic logjam, and to transport visitors to the Boardwalk amusement park. Approximatley 13 PRT proposals were received.
The system sketch below has 22 stations and 8.6 miles of one-way guideway for an estimated capital cost of between $65M and $129M:
ULTra PRT is an electric, 200-mpg-equivalent, elevated transit system with many 4-person vehicles. First deployment is scheduled for London Heathrow Airport in Spring 2010, to serve Heathrow's new Terminal 5. Working as circulator transit for office parks, airports, universities, and other major activity centers, PRT is faster than a car. In these applications, PRT makes carpooling and transit more effective, by solving the "last mile problem." PRT also enables longer bike commutes and shopping trips.
